Hi Fructose at the Crocker

As temperatures soared, we escaped to the coolest place in town. And found the coolest exhibit in town. Or is it the hottest exhibit? 

Cool or hot? Or maybe both?

Whatever the adjective, get yourself to the collection of Turn the Page: The First Ten Years of Hi-Fructose. It's at the Crocker Art Museum until September 17, 2017. So time is short. The visual feast is totally worth making an effort to get to the museum. Hi-Fructose is a showcase for Hi-Fructose Magazine, a New Contemporary Art Magazine. We each chose favorite pieces. The kids loved the Veiwmasters and the fantastical landscapes. We all enjoyed the colors and stories. The curious juxtaposition of whimsy and seriousness. Modern life with tinges of comedy. And darkness. 

Just outside the door, an art lounge gave the kids a crazy chance to immense themselves in art. They didn't realize that they became art along with the room. Their lounging in white bean bags amidst a swirling array of colors and black and white shapes (reminiscent of a psychedelic concert poster) added to the story of chaos and calm, color and black&white, movement and rest. I don't know if they realized their contribution to the gallery :)

Then, next door we discovered Plink, a kaleidoscope of color and sound intended (I guess from reading the description) for kids. Speakers set into the array of candy-color triangles distorted voices and threw them across the room, much to the amusement of my kids (and us adults). Ian built new sculptures of his own. And we relaxed again on a gray couch with green trees outside and a spray of bright shapes arcing overhead.

Mirrors nestled into the web of colors brought us right up to the art installation. We enjoyed finding ourselves cast in an oversize kaleidoscope, our reflections upside down and sideways. Made for fun selfies!
