Rough Roading to the River

Yesterday we ignored reports of rain. After all, rain is rare these days. Lenkaland Photography

We stopped at the local grocery for important supplies. Like chips, orange soda, green tea, and Dr. Pepper. And adult beverages.

Then we piled into my brother and sister-in-law's four wheel drive vehicles to find their secret spot by the river. Up into the mountains, then off the main roads, through a creek, and over boulders.

The girls played "Jurassic Park" in the backseat. They glimpsed long necks and velociraptors through the trees. "This is better than a roller coaster!" they said after each jounce and bump.

We arrived in light rain. Whoops. We didn't let it dampen our spirits though!

Luckily my brother remembered rain gear!

My brother's family dog. Happy Gunner :)

Mila snuggled in her dad's sweatshirt. Since he had appropriate raingear and all :)

Across the river. Paul rode over on the quad and Gunner followed.

Heather and I found the coolest, crooked bridge. We didn't walk across. Gunner ran over a few times.

Heather and I found this crazy-cool flower that grew bright red in the dark woods. Turns out it is a snow flower. We had to text my biologist cousins for answers.

All the green drank up the rain. Such happy plants!

Paul brought his griddle and we had sausages wrapped in bacon. No joke. Best lunch on the planet.

Giovanni caught the action as well.

One of Paul's new contraptions was the BioLite Wood Burning Campstove.

This thing is seriously awesome. It charges up and has a small fan that kindles fire inside the cone. Think of those hours spent blowing on smoky campfires and skip that step. We had to hunt for anything dry so it was especially smoky.

But it caught! And we were very entertained feeding it little twigs. Eventually, it warmed up enough that he could charge his iPhone with it. Yep. Charging an iPhone. Camping technology rocks! It even had atachments for a Kettle and a Grill Attachment! Serious fun :)

The rain returned so we packed up and made plans to return again soon.
