Photo session for Tweens and Teens
Why you want to give a photosession to a tween or teen?
I’ve given photo sessions to tweens and teens for awhile now. Mostly because they are fun! The girls love a chance to collaborate on images and be model for a day. Once, we woke super-early to catch the morning light. Another time, we captured dancing at the beach. Each time, the girls delight in seeing themselves afterwards, laughing with friends, showing their inner beauty.
Recently, I discovered more reasons to give photo sessions to tweens. A few surprised me.
They change quickly. We get used to how a child looks day-to-day. And, honestly, the child years do not prepare us for the rapid changes of tweens and teens. A matter of months can change them so much. I think my girl looks older than she ever has, look how big she has grown! And yet, I look back on photos from six months ago, and she looks so different. We both treasure the portraits of her growing up.
Their self image benefits. I know a successful photo when a girl gasps. That’s me? That’s what I look like? There’s a myth that growing up is awkward. I find that all girls, at all ages, are beautiful. Stunning. There’s an inner light that can change how they feel about themselves when they see what others see in them.
They learn tricks and ideas. Along with self esteem, I help teach a few tricks for photogenic photos. Really, a true smile is always beautiful. I can also work with a hair and makeup artist for styling and teaching girls how to care for their skin and apply makeup in a flattering (not heavy) way. A tilt of the chin and a turn of the shoulders can change how photos look dramatically. Girls use these ideas for future photos (see that tricky self esteem going up again?).
They love being “models". And opportunity for modeling is the best game in town! Give them an opportunity to collaborate on their shoot, and we have a dynamo team! I like to email girls ahead of time to give feedback about outfits. We choose a location they enjoy. Every girl gets to be the center of attention for their shoot. I show them test shots and bring them into the process so they own the shoot. And love the results!
